The Commander of the 2 Brigade Nigerian Army Port Harcourt in Rivers State, Brigadier General Yusuf Tukur Buratai, has revealed how security agencies in the state were able to foil an attempt to bomb the barracks and other strategic points in State on Christmas night by suspected men of Boko Haram sect.
Brigadier General Buratai , who made the disclosure at the Rivers State Security Council press briefing at the Brigade Headquarters yesterday said the arrested suspects, who also attempted to bomb the popular Bougainvilla Hotel and Shell facility in the state capital were arrested within and outside the Barracks.
« I also want to inform this audience that through the collaborative efforts of the Brigade and DSS, an attempt to bomb Port Harcourt Barrack (Bori Camp), Bougainvilla Hotel and Shell facility along Aba Road was foiled on night of 24/25 December 2011. The suspects were arrested in the Barracks as well as other locations within Port Harcourt city.
« They had materials for making Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) capable of causing heavy damage. The suspects have made useful statements and would soon be arraigned accordingly, » Buratai said.
Buratai, who did not disclose the identities of the suspects, however, explained that a soldier from the Barracks, who is believed to be a friend to one of the suspects, was also arrested but later discovered not to be part of the plan following investigation.
