The Army has condemned Saturday’s attack on an oil pipeline in the Niger Delta by The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND).
The recent attack by MEND on an Agip-operated pipeline comes a week before governorship elections in Bayelsa, President Goodluck Jonathan’s home state.
The military in a statement condemned the attacks, and said that they had not determined the extent of the damage.
This attack has added to the number of deadly explosions and violence experienced in Nigeria, with the Boko Haram menace in the North, MEND has promised to unleash more attacks against these oil companies.
Militancy significantly reduced after the amnesty programme was introduced in 2009, but the attack that took place late Saturday night and the recent threats by MEND is set to unsettle the Niger Delta.
