A countrywide fuel shortage at SA National Defence Force facilities could affect operational needs because it owes R26m on its fuel bill, Beeld newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Operations already affected were the patrolling of the Zimbabwe and Mozambique borders.
The problem had reached such critical proportions that the defence department had requested the Treasury to intervene, the paper reported.
It was not quite clear whether this step had become necessary because the SANDF did not have funds available to settle the outstanding fuel bill.
SANDF spokesperson Brigadier General Xolani Mabanga said the defence force was doing its best to pay the debt. However, it had become necessary to involve the Treasury in this matter.
He added it was important for the defence force to maintain good relations with its supplier KwaZulu-Natal Oils.
